An energy storage system (ESS) can provide reserve capacity for the power system through the ancillary services market. This requires demonstrated technical capability, the appropriate market participant status and compliance with agreed obligations. A battery's rapid response alone does not guarantee qualification, success in an auction or income.

This article explains the route from choosing a service to monitoring its delivery. It distinguishes reserve capacity from activated energy and discusses system availability and financial scenarios. Use it to prepare a technical brief and a list of information for an equipment discussion.

What an ESS can provide to the power system

Ancillary services support safe and reliable power system operation. For storage, relevant services use the ability to change active power. Within its confirmed capabilities, a system can increase output, reduce consumption or change these flows in the opposite direction.

Frequency regulation distinguishes frequency containment reserve (FCR) from frequency restoration reserves activated automatically or manually, known as aFRR and mFRR. Response, duration and control requirements depend on the specific service. One response-time figure cannot be applied to every reserve.

Having a storage system does not automatically demonstrate the ability to provide other ancillary services, such as voltage-related services or system restoration. These tasks require a separate review of the equipment, configuration and qualification process.

Start with the service requirement: direction of power change, operating range, activation signal and method of demonstrating performance. Then assess the proposed ESS configuration. Reversing that sequence risks purchasing equipment whose parameters do not meet the selected task.

How eligibility to provide a service is confirmed

A manufacturer's document for a battery or converter does not replace confirmation that a unit can provide a particular ancillary service. The relevant conformity procedure concerns the actual configuration and its operation. A successful component test does not by itself describe the performance of the whole facility.

General ESS testing and acceptance helps establish verified system parameters. Market qualification has its own requirements for the service concerned. The documents should show what was tested, for which unit and over what range.

The participant completes the required steps for ancillary service provider status, registration and the necessary agreements. Separately, check when an energy storage licence is required. Licensing, technical qualification and market status serve different purposes.

The working file should identify the unit, the verified configuration version, measurement results and the scope of confirmed capability. Project documents, the control system and qualification documents must describe the same installation. Consistent information is needed both to assess an offer and to monitor delivery later.

  1. Define the service. Agree the unit, parameters and applicable requirements.
  2. Confirm capability. Perform the required checks and document the results.
  3. Prepare participation. Check status, contracts, data exchange and procurement terms.

What actual ESS availability means

Nameplate power is not the same as reserve available at every moment. Consider the current operating mode, permitted import and export, module availability and other commitments. Check whether the flow can change in the required direction from the agreed operating point.

Energy is equally important. Sustained increased output requires sufficient charge, while additional charging requires free capacity. After activation, the system may need to restore its operating energy reserve. Assess ESS duration together with the service profile and charging windows.

Regulation in both directions requires adequate room for both charging and discharging. The operating range is set for the chosen service and battery limits. The same state of charge percentage does not demonstrate the same available reserve across configurations: usable energy and permitted power matter.

ESS energy management must coordinate commands, measurements, limits and events. Reliable data exchange, status monitoring and verification of actual response are important. A remote interface alone does not demonstrate compliance with the required control channel.

For an industrial system such as Sungrow PowerTitan 2.0 ESS, request documentation for the specific supplied version and project configuration. A product page is not confirmation of qualification for Ukraine's ancillary services market. Check power, reserve and connection capabilities for the entire agreed facility.

Reserve capacity and activated energy

Reserve describes readiness to change power by the required amount during a specified period. Activation creates an actual change in energy flow. These quantities are different: reserve is expressed in MW and energy over the activation period in MWh. They cannot be treated as a single revenue figure.

Consider a hypothetical automatic frequency restoration reserve. The model assumes 2 MW of reserve for one two-hour period at a hypothetical price of UAH 500 per MW of reserve for that entire period. These are illustrative inputs, not a real auction price.

MeasureHypothetical valueWhat it represents
Agreed reserve2 MWAvailable regulating capacity
Price for the entire periodUAH 500 per MWRate for the specified two-hour period
Availability calculation2 × 500 = UAH 1,000Result if the model conditions are fully met
Change in flow upon activation0.4 MW for 15 minutes0.4 × 0.25 = 0.1 MWh

Because the price is already specified for the whole period, the payment must not be multiplied by two hours again. UAH 1,000 is before expenses and tax calculations. The 0.1 MWh describes the change in energy flow during the hypothetical activation, not the facility's total output.

Reserving 2 MW for two hours also does not mean the installation actually discharged 4 MWh. Actual energy depends on activations. To demonstrate readiness, separately check whether energy is sufficient to support the required profile, including possible repeated commands.

Settlement of activated energy depends on the service. Activation of aFRR, mFRR and replacement reserve is associated with the balancing market. FCR activation energy is accounted for as an imbalance. It would therefore be incorrect to assume the same separate energy payment model for every reserve.

Why qualification does not guarantee procurement

Reserve requirements follow the needs of the system. A facility's technical capability does not automatically create demand for all of its capacity. The outcome depends on procurement terms, the accepted offer, volume and service period.

The offered volume must match confirmed capabilities and existing obligations. Capacity reserved for an incompatible task cannot be offered again as fully available. Check the validity of supporting documents and whether the unit's parameters remain current.

After selection, delivery matters: actual availability, response and monitoring data. Failure to perform may affect payment and contractual liability. Include the relevant terms in the financial model rather than assuming all offered capacity is continuously paid for.

Command and measurement records should use a consistent time basis. Otherwise differences between expected and actual response may be explained incorrectly. Also retain limits and event records to distinguish equipment unavailability from data exchange errors or comparisons across different intervals.

How to assess revenue in a combined model

Storage can serve several purposes, but they compete for the same physical resource. For example, electricity arbitrage requires a suitable charging and sales schedule. Reserve during the same hours may constrain that schedule or require a different energy buffer.

Compare a feasible combined operating plan, not the sum of separate maximum results. For each period, set priorities, available power, charge and obligations. Assess the service alongside its costs, the alternative operation forgone and the restoration of readiness after activation.

Costs may include preparation and testing, control, communications, operation, losses and use of battery life. Do not count the same cost twice in different parts of the model. Hypothetical reserve revenue is not the net investment result: separately assess ESS cash flows and payback.

Compare a scenario without ancillary service procurement, a justified base case and a more favourable case. This shows how much the outcome depends on being selected. Do not assume a fixed increase in annual margin or return without a project-specific calculation.

For each scenario explain the procurement volumes and periods used and which assumptions are not yet confirmed by contract. Changes in available power, price or the number of accepted periods should be reflected separately in the result. This exposes dependencies hidden behind a single annual total.

Information to prepare for the next step

Before discussing the project, gather technical parameters and a description of the intended participation. Identify the unit that will provide the service, who controls it and how performance will be verified. The documents must correspond to the actual configuration.

  • Service type, regulation directions and required operating periods.
  • Usable energy, power, operating state of charge and connection limits.
  • Equipment, control, measurement and data exchange configuration.
  • Test programme, valid confirmations, status and contractual obligations.
  • Procurement scenarios, costs, availability and other storage tasks.

The resulting material should trace the route from confirmed capability to actual delivery and settlement. Before participating, check current requirements and the terms of the specific procurement. This supports a project assessment without treating technical capability as a promise of income.
