Connecting an energy storage system to the grid begins with checking its connection point and intended operating modes. It is necessary to determine who owns the networks, how much power the facility will import and export, which documents have already been issued. These answers help you choose a procedure even before ordering equipment.
The sequence may be different for a new site, an operating plant and storage at another owner’s power plant. Below is a preparation map for the business owner and project manager: inputs, responsibilities, deliverables, and pre-connection checks. A specific package of documents and scope of work are determined for the selected configuration.
Define configuration and network operator
First, the storage, generation, enterprise load and connection to the external network are shown on a one-line diagram. They also indicate the owners of the equipment and the boundary of network ownership, which separates the corresponding parts of the networks. According to these data, three situations are distinguished.
- A separate new ESS. For the object, the point and conditions of the new connection service are determined.
- ESS in the internal networks of the enterprise. The possibility of operation within the limits of the available permitted flows and the applicability of the special installation procedure are checked.
- Another user’s storage system in an existing network. Assess the shared connection route with the operator, primary user and sub-user.
A private agreement with the owner of internal networks does not replace the establishment of relations with the operator. At the same time, the solar plant and battery owned by the same business do not become a scheme of different users just because of the different purpose of the equipment. Organizational differences will help clarify the comparison of models of ESS use.
The distribution system operator, or DSO, is contacted for the appropriate route of the distribution network. The transmission system operator, or TSO, works with connections that meet the criteria of the transmission system. The choice depends on the nature of the network and the facility’s parameters, including voltage and power.
For an existing enterprise, current and future power schemes are also compared. A change in voltage, point or reliability requirements can affect the route even when the customer does not plan to increase the battery rating. The presence of electricity on the site does not solve this issue by itself.
Check import and export separately
Import means receiving electricity from the external grid; export describes the opposite direction. Each has its own permitted power limit. The nameplate rating of a storage system does not by itself authorize an equivalent flow at the facility boundary.
The calculation must cover the simultaneous operation of the battery, generation and consumers. The kWh capacity describes the energy reserve, but does not replace the kW check at the connection point. The article on power and capacity of ESS explains the difference.
Illustrative power balance
Suppose the enterprise consumes 200 kW, and the battery is simultaneously charged with a power of 150 kW on the AC side. There is no local generation in this tutorial; losses and additional auxiliary consumption are not taken into account. Assume the permitted import is 300 kW.
Import from the grid: 200 + 150 = 350 kW. Excess: 350 − 300 = 50 kW.
This mode is not included in the limit. Options for design verification: limit charging according to the load or arrange the required additional power. The given numbers explain the balance, and do not confirm the suitability of a specific automation. Potential export during discharge must be assessed separately.
Collect the input data for the application
It is convenient to start the preparation from the project folder for the facility. It includes available documents and information that the designer can use to check the scheme and parameters. This is a preparatory checklist, not a universal regulatory list of annexes to the application.
- Address, location plan and grounds for using the site.
- Data of the applicant, the owners of electrical installations and the authority of the representative.
- Valid contracts, connection point documentation and network boundary documents for the existing facility.
- Storage system parameters, voltage, and required import and export.
- Joint operating modes, auxiliary consumption and anticipated construction phases.
- Preliminary diagram of connection, measurement and control.
Prior to submission, the consistency of addresses, names, owners and numbers in various documents is checked. The presence of a folder does not mean that the application is complete: its form and attachments are determined by the applicable procedure. For a new facility and battery installation in internal networks, requests may be different.
It is useful to have a separate list of uncertain data: what is missing, who clarifies it and what decision depends on the answer. For example, the missing value of the permitted export should not be filled with the power of the inverter. First, you need to confirm the parameter in the appropriate documents, after that you can complete the calculation of the modes.
Build a sequence with the result of each stage
A plan to connect an energy storage installation should be driven by specific results. The record "documents in progress" does not show whether the required capacity has been determined and who should perform the next action. The table helps distribute the work without promising the same route for all objects.
| Stage | Responsible | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Customer and designer | Scheme, owners and purpose of installation. |
| Network parameters | Designer by source data | Comparison of allowed and required flows. |
| Choosing the procedure | The customer with the participation of the operator | The route, application and package of documents are determined. |
| Formation of conditions | Customer and operator | Technical conditions and contract for a new service or special procedure documents. |
| Project decisions | Contractually designated contractors | Network part, ESS, protection, communication and metering agreed. |
| Works and inspections | Responsible performers and operator within their limits | Works performed and test results confirmed. |
| Completion | Customer and operator | Properly completed connection, updated connection point records and contracts. |
For internal installation without a new service, the stage of obtaining new technical specifications cannot be automatically transferred from the general procedure. However, applicable technical requirements, accounting, checks and paperwork remain. The work schedule is specified after the route is selected.
Compare technical conditions, contract and budget
Technical conditions describe the requirements for the proposed connection. The contract defines who and in what sequence ensures their implementation, as well as distributed work, payments and responsibilities. Both documents should be read together with the scheme of the object.
Point, voltage, power of each direction, network measures and design limits are checked. It is important to see not only the total amount, but also its composition: connection service, work on the customer's side, accounting organization. They find out separately which costs are already included in a specific contract.
The calculation of the fee is checked against the rules applicable on the date of registration. The project of amendments to the normative document is not a reason to consider the new formula finally approved. Compare offers correctly based on the same composition of works and initial parameters.
In the project calendar, the validity of the technical specifications, the terms of payments, the transfer of documentation and its finalization are separately noted. Next to each term, an initial event and a responsible one are required. This allows you to see the dependence between the actions of the customer and the operator and not to plan the installation by a date that only concerns the review of the application.
If flexible connection is considered, the guaranteed and non-guaranteed capacity, its limitation conditions and management requirements are fixed. Non-guaranteed capacity may not be available exactly when charging or discharge is required. This feature is taken into account in the operating modes and economy of the installation.
Coordinate network design, protection and metering
The network part and the main ESS project must describe compatible solutions. Before purchase, voltage, circuit, protection functions, flow limitation, communication channels and measurements are checked. For each adjacent part, the performer and the result that he conveys to other participants are determined.
Commercial metering should be included in the plan from the beginning: provide for the necessary measurements, responsible and registration. Storage system monitoring data should not automatically be considered ready-made data for commercial calculations. The meaning of abbreviations will help clarify the Glossary of energy storage equipment, metering and control.
The specification should explain where the flows are measured and how the system reacts to approaching their limits. It is necessary to agree on which device receives the data, who executes the restriction command and how the result is checked. A list of equipment names is not enough to describe such interaction.
If the combined project includes a new or modified solar power plant, the solar part can be discussed solar power plant design. The scope of work on storage and network connection is determined separately: the solar plant design service by itself does not confirm the completion of all these tasks.
The necessary organizational and permitting prerequisites are also checked before the works. The schedule links payment, design, supply, network work and inspections. The deadline for receiving one document does not describe the duration of the entire project.
Separate installation, connection and operation in the market
An installed storage cabinet does not mean the connection is complete. It is necessary to confirm the fulfillment of the project requirements, to carry out the prescribed inspections of equipment, protection, automation and communication, to organize accounting and to complete the proper registration of the connection.
For the distribution system, a distinction is made between the notification of the provision of the connection service and the subsequent connection of the customer's electrical installations. In the transmission system, the completion of the service is connected to the connection and confirmed by the act. Therefore, one document name cannot be a universal sign of completion for both routes.
Before starting work, they check whether the connection point record, permitted flows, limits of responsibility and contracts correspond to the actual configuration. It is important to transfer the test results and agreed settings to the owner, so that further operation is based on the established parameters.
For acceptance, it is convenient to match each requirement with the result: the work performed, the inspection report or the issued document. Unfulfilled positions are left open with a designated executor. This way, the project manager can see whether the system is already ready for the next stage, or just delivered and installed on the site.
The commercial model remains a separate task: own consumption, sale or participation in the relevant market segments. Physical connection does not replace account requirements, contracts and participant roles. In the project plan, these inspections have their own responsible persons.
